Description
Super CBD x Nightingale
Grizzly is a potent and aromatic feminized hemp cultivar that reliably produces high-quality smokable hemp flowers. This Sativa-dominant strain is a hybrid of Super CBD and Nightingale, two hemp varieties renowned for their flavorful, CBD-rich buds. Grizzly hemp seeds display the best traits of both of their parents: large yield, low THC content, high CBD content, and rich terpene profile.
True to its name, Grizzly is a beast of a strain. This cultivar grows rapidly to an impressive height, producing large, uniform colas coated in a thick blanket of trichomes. The variety is both hardy and adaptable, making it an excellent choice for any hemp farmer. With its dense buds, high CBD content, and pleasant aroma and flavor, Grizzly is a favorite of medical and recreational users seeking high-quality smokable hemp flowers. Its tall and stout structure also makes it an excellent choice for biomass production.
Grizzly Hemp Origin
Super CBD
Super CBD, the mother of Grizzly, is a powerful industrial hemp variety capable of producing copious amounts of cannabidiol, or CBD. The Super CBD cultivar originated in Israel, a region that has been at the forefront of medical cannabis research and development. After its debut in the United States, Super CBD quickly became popular among hemp farmers and medical users, who appreciated its vigorous growth, low THC level, and flavorful CBD-rich buds.
Super CBD hemp seeds are Sativa-dominant hybrids, capable of growing to a height above 12 feet in a single season. As a result of the speed at which it grows, Super CBD can produce an above-average yield even when planted late in the season. Importantly, this variety is highly adaptable and grows well in non-irrigated fields and areas with short growing seasons.
Super CBD produces a bountiful harvest of small, trichome-encrusted buds packed with cannabinoids, terpenes, and flavonoids. When exposed to colder temperatures, the leaves and buds of this cultivar may display striking purple hues.
Nightingale
Nightingale, the other parent of Grizzly, is a polyhybrid hemp strain from Medical Marijuana Genetics. This variety got its name from Florence Nightingale, the founder of modern nursing. As the name suggests, Nightingale is an excellent strain for medical users. Its hemp seeds produce flowers rich in CBD, a cannabinoid that that seemingly possesses many therapeutic properties. This variety also contains dense quantities of other cannabinoids, terpenes, and flavonoids that may soothe pain, relieve stress and elevate the mood.
Nightingale is an Indica-dominant hybrid, although the structure of some phenotypes may be more Sativa-like. Nightingale is of medium height, producing an average yield of high-quality hemp flowers. Because of its compact structure, Nightingale grows well indoors, outdoors, and in greenhouses. Importantly, this variety matures quickly and is usually ready to harvest in eight to nine weeks. The leaves of Nightingale may turn deep shades of purple during the late flowering period.
Grizzly Hemp Lineage
Super CBD
The lineage of Super CBD is a mystery. Due to its tall height and significant internodal spacing, this Israeli-bred variety likely descended from the tropical Sativa varieties commonly found in Central and South America and Southeast Asia. The fragrance of Super CBD is similar to the pine and wood aroma of some Mexican Sativas.
Nightingale
Unlike Super CBD, the lineage of Nightingale is well documented. This variety is a hybrid of Oldberry and CD-1. Oldberry, also known as Shishkaberry, is a high-THC cannabis variety that combines DJ Short’s Blueberry and an unknown Afghani strain. Oldberry produces dense, resin-coated buds that emit a lovely aroma of sweet berries.
CD-1, also known as Candida, is the other parent of Nightingale. CD-1 is a high-CBD strain that produces remarkably low THC levels (less than one percent THC). This cultivar is a hybrid of ACDC and Harlequin, two hemp varieties prized for their rich CBD content.
Because Nightingale is a hybrid of a high-THC strain and a low-THC strain, it produces phenotypes that vary in cannabinoid content. Notably, the plants may produce between one percent and ten percent THC and ten percent to 20 percent CBD, making it an excellent choice for medical users.
Grizzly Hemp Flower
Grizzly is a feminized F1 hybrid of Super CBD and Nightingale. Hemp farmers highly value feminized seeds because they produce stable and reliable plants that are 99.9 percent female. Feminized seeds make the growing process simple by eliminating the need to identify and separate male hemp plants for optimal CBD output.
Growers also prize F1 hybrids because of their highly uniform structure and hardy, vigorous growth. Because Grizzly is an F1 hybrid, some phenotypes may be more Super CBD-dominant, and some may be more Nightingale-dominant. Regardless, nearly every phenotype will produce a large yield of premium hemp buds.
By crossing Super CBD with Nightingale, Fortuna Hemp brings Grizzly hemp seeds roaring to life—a Sativa-dominant variety consistently low in THC and high in CBD. Grizzly contains an average of 0.3 percent THC, making it an excellent choice for licensed U.S. hemp farmers. Additionally, it produces up to 11 percent CBD, making it ideal for the production of smokable hemp flowers, hemp extracts, and CBD-isolate products. In addition, the long and thick stalks of this cultivar are also great for fiber production.
Qualities of Grizzly
Aroma
Super CBD, the mother of Grizzly, produces aromatic flowers that are rich in terpenes and flavonoids. This variety emits a delightful aroma of pine and fine wood, with subtle notes of tea tree and eucalyptus. Because of its mild but pleasant smell, this variety is excellent for producing hemp edibles.
Nightingale, the other parent of Grizzly, offers an intense and mouth-watering aroma of sweet and sour citrus. It also emits fruity notes of sweet blueberry, likely inherited from its Shishkaberry parent.
Notably, Grizzly produces a complex bouquet of pine, fresh soil, and cinnamon, with orange and hops notes. Some phenotypes may lean toward the pine and eucalyptus aroma of Super CBD, while others share the sweet berry and citrus bouquet of Nightingale. This terpene-rich cultivar also produces a variety of flavorful phenotypes.
Flavor
The complex aroma of Grizzly carries through in its flavor. This variety coats the mouth with sweet and sour notes of citrus, soil, and skunk. Some Nightingale-dominant phenotypes may produce the delicious flavors of sweet blueberry and orange. Conversely, Super CBD-dominant phenotypes often exhibit the subtle and savory flavors of pine and tea tree. This highly flavorful variety is an excellent choice for producing smokable hemp flowers and edibles.
Effects
Super CBD, the mother of Grizzly, delivers a pleasant and clearheaded effect. Because of its low THC level, users report that Super CBD is not psychoactive and does not inhibit one’s senses or mental alertness. Due to its relatively high CBD content, this variety may reduce pain and tension in the body and soothe the mind. Super CBD is an excellent choice for users who wish to remain alert and productive.
In contrast, Nightingale, the other parent of Grizzly, is a potent and narcotic Indica-dominant strain. Although this variety is high in CBD, some phenotypes may contain up to ten percent THC, which may cause a psychoactive effect. Users report that this variety offers a mellow, body-numbing sensation that some say provides relief from pain and stress. Experts recommend that users enjoy this cultivar at night due to its sleep-inducing high.
Concerning its effects, Grizzly is more akin to Super CBD than to Nightingale. Grizzly is very low in THC and does not produce a psychoactive effect. It delivers a calming and soothing high that leaves users feeling relaxed but lucid. Users reportedly enjoy this pleasant variety throughout the day because it does not inhibit one’s senses or produce undesirable effects such as paranoia or anxiety.
Structure
Super CBD, the mother of Grizzly, is highly Sativa-dominant in its growth structure. Because Super CBD can reach a height of 12 feet or more in a single growing season, this variety may be best suited to outdoor cultivation. Super CBD produces long, thick branches with large internodal spacing. The substantial length of the branches makes this a viable strain for fiber production. Super CBD creates large colas of frosty buds that may turn purple late in the growing season.
In contrast, Nightingale, the other parent of Grizzly, is Indica-dominant in structure. This variety is of medium height, with tight internodal spacing and dense, resin-coated flowers. Because of its compact structure, Nightingale is highly popular among indoor and greenhouse growers.
Grizzly tends to resemble Super CBD in its growth structure. As a Sativa-dominant variety, Grizzly grows exceptionally tall, stretching considerably during the early flowering period. Grizzly develops large, thick branches with substantial internodal spacing. This hemp variety produces large, uniform colas with a minimal leaf-to-cola ratio. The buds are dense and frosty and may exhibit hues of lime green or purple depending on the climate in which they are grown.
Grizzly Potential Medical Applications
Grizzly is rich in cannabinoids, terpenes, flavonoids, and other desirable hemp compounds. Studies have shown that these compounds may possess a multitude of therapeutic properties. Grizzly is particularly rich in CBD, a cannabinoid whose calming and soothing effects have made it popular among medical consumers. Users report that this strain may relieve pain, reduce stress, elevate the mood, and increase appetite. Grizzly is an excellent choice for medical users who wish to ease their pain but remain alert and clearheaded.
Growing Grizzly
Both Super CBD and Nightingale are hardy, easy-to-grow hemp varieties. Grizzly is also easy to cultivate and, like its parents, produces robust plants that grow vigorously. Grizzly seeds are extremely stable and viable, with a 97-percent germination rate and a feminization rate of 99.9 percent. As such, farmers can be confident knowing that nearly every seed will produce a potent, flavorful, and sexually stable female hemp plant.
Grizzly is resilient to most environmental stresses and has shown itself to be adaptable to a wide variety of climates. Its adaptability makes it a great choice for any farmer, especially those located in the southernmost United States. This cultivar thrives in organic, slightly alkaline soil but grows well in various growing mediums.
Grizzly proliferates during the vegetative period and matures quickly during flowering, making it viable for late-season planting. This variety may begin flowering when exposed to 13 or fewer hours of daylight. Grizzly offers an above-average yield and, with a three- to four-week vegetative growth period, it can produce an average of one pound of hemp buds per plant. When the vegetative growth period extends, Grizzly can yield even more hemp flowers. Importantly, farmers may need to stake the plants to support the weight of their massive colas.
Indoor Growing
Grizzly’s great height makes it best-suited to outdoor and greenhouse cultivation. This variety may require extensive training for farmers growing indoors to limit its stretch during the flowering period. High-stress and low-stress training methods, such as topping, fimming, and super cropping, may reduce the height and increase this variety’s yield.
Pest and Disease Control
Grizzly is highly resilient to most pests and diseases. Its minimal leaf-to-cola ratio makes it less prone to fungal diseases than are other hemp strains. This trait makes Grizzly an excellent choice for farmers in the Southern United States or high humidity areas. This variety is also resistant to worms and other pests. Due to its resilience to pests and diseases, pesticides and chemical additives are rarely necessary to grow this variety.

Grizzly provided a successful grow in my state, Minnesota, where the laws regarding THC levels are tricky. It had a high CBD level, although this seemed to vary from plant to plant; a THC level of .16, which was well within the legal limit of .3; and when decarboxylated, produced a THC level right at 5 percent, the highest legal number for producers. Its terpenes were intense – of vanilla cake batter – lovely. We started 75 plants indoors, had 100% germination success, and transplanted them to an outdoor hoop house where they grew in the ground, but were protected. We’re organic growers, and companion-planted marigolds heavily, which succeeded in keeping away aphids and other pests, a problem in the past. Plants grew to around 10 – 12 feet high. Only complaint was an uneven bloom and that the plant branches were thin, almost wiry compared to the other strain we grew. It made a great salve for pain and when inhaled, treated pain and anxiety.
