Description
No. 5 x BaOX
Valley Kush is a jack-of-all-trades. This potent feminized hemp strain offers an enormous yield, delicious aroma and flavor, and exceptional bag appeal. Farmers love the fast flowering time and vigorous growth of Valley Kush. Medical and recreational users cherish its soothing, non-intoxicating effects and robust flavor.
The breeders of Valley Kush combined two powerful hemp cultivars—BaOx and No. 5—to create a strain that reliably produces premium smokable hemp flowers. Its thick branches make this variety suitable for biomass production. Its dense, frosty buds are rich in CBD and low in THC, making it a great choice for licensed U.S. hemp farmers.
Valley Kush Origin
Valley Kush’s story starts with a hemp cultivar known as BaOx. BaOx was originally bred by Centennial Seeds—a group of breeders in Lafayette, Colorado. To create this Indica-dominant strain, the breeders selected a plant from an inbred line of Hindu Kush and crossed it with a CBD-rich hemp strain known as Otto II. The breeders then backcrossed this hybrid, stabilizing its most desirable traits. Since its birth, BaOx has become an important tool for hemp breeders and has enabled them to create many high-CBD strains that are potent, flavorful, and aromatic.
North Fork Agriculture, another well-known group of hemp breeders, used Centennial Seeds’ BaOx to develop Valley Kush. The North Fork team inbred BaOx one more time, further stabilizing its traits, then crossed BaOX with a hemp cultivar known as No. 5. Finally, the breeders backcrossed the No. 5-BaOx hybrid with BaOx. The resulting strain was dubbed “Valley Kush.”
Valley Kush Lineage
BaOx
BaOx is a hybrid of Hindu Kush and Otto II. Hindu Kush is a pure-Indica strain that originated in the Hindu Kush mountains of Afghanistan and Pakistan. This landrace strain forms short, thick branches, and large, dense colas that are coated in a thick blanket of trichomes. Hindu Kush tends to flower rapidly and is resilient to many environmental stresses.
The lineage of Otto II is unclear. This hemp variety is believed to be a cross of several industrial strains of hemp. Otto II is a true-breeding strain which reliably produces offspring that are rich in CBD. This variety produces gigantic buds that emit a delightful aroma of lemon and wood.
No. 5 is an inbred version of Tangistan R4, a fast-flowering hemp strain that produces CBD-rich buds. Tangistan R4 is cross of Tangerine and R4. Greenwerkz, a dispensary in Colorado, is believed to have created R4 by crossing a Reclining Buddha female with a high-CBD strain known as Harli-Tsu. Tangistan R4, also known as Cindy’s Solution, is a popular strain among medical users seeking relief from pain and stress. This cultivar offers a pleasant aroma of chocolate and soil, with a floral undertone.
North Fork Ag bred Tangistan R4 for multiple generations, stabilizing its high-CBD and low-THC tendencies. They named this strain “No. 5” to distinguish it from Tangistan R4. They then crossed this inbred variety with BaOx, and backcrossed again to BaOx, creating Valley Kush.
Fortuna Hemp’s Valley Kush is offered in feminized-seed form. Farmers value feminized seeds because these seeds make the growing process easy and rewarding. Approximately 99.9 percent of feminized seeds will produce all-female plants. This means that farmers won’t have to worry about their crops being pollinated by male plants.
Qualities of Valley Kush
Aroma
BaOx, the mother of Valley Kush, is rich in terpenes and flavonoids, and produces an aroma that is both sweet and earthy. This cultivar contains myrcene, caryophyllene, and bisabolol. These terpenes combine to create a bouquet of soil, herbs, and green apple, with hints of gasoline and skunk.
Valley Kush inherited the funky aroma of BaOx. This variety smells strongly of fresh soil, petrol, and skunk, with hints of citrus. Its aroma is reminiscent of classic American strains such as Bubba Kush and OG Kush.
Flavor
Valley Kush offers a rich, earthy flavor that lingers on the tongue. The smoke is thick and expansive, and tastes of soil, petrol, and skunk, with subtle hints of citrus. Some phenotypes of Valley Kush may take on the sweet and earthy taste of BaOx, and other phenotypes may taste more of sweet-and-sour citrus. Most plants will present the earthy and skunky flavor for which Valley Kush is known.
Effects
BaOx, the ancestor of Valley Kush, provides a potent concentration of CBD (typically between 9 percent and 14 percent) and a low concentration of THC (less than 0.3 percent). As a result, this strain is reported to offer a soothing and relaxing effect, while remaining non-intoxicating. Its terpene profile includes the uplifting caryophyllene and the sedating myrcene, giving this strain a well-balanced effect suitable for both daytime and nighttime use.
Like BaOx, Valley Kush is rich in CBD and low in THC. Due to the abundance of CBD, this strain provides a deeply relaxing and soothing effect that is non-intoxicating. Users report that this strain may relieve pain, elevate the mood, and stimulate the appetite, while leaving the user feeling clearheaded and functional.
Structure
BaOx, the predecessor of Valley Kush, is of short to medium height, with thick branches that have tight internodal spacing. This variety forms thick, sharply serrated leaves and large, frosty colas. The flowers are dense and resinous and are festooned with bright red pistils.
Valley Kush is of medium height, with robust branches and large, thick fan leaves. This cultivar forms massive colas that are dripping in trichomes. The lime-green flowers are dense and sticky and have amber and red pistils. When exposed to cold temperatures, some phenotypes of Valley Kush display hues of purple on the tips of the leaves.
Potential Medical Applications of Valley Kush
Valley Kush is rich in cannabinoids, terpenes, and other desirable hemp compounds, which are reported to possess therapeutic properties. When these compounds are combined, they create a deeply soothing and relaxing effect. Due to its abundant CBD content, this variety is reported to be effective in relieving pain and stress and promoting deep sleep, without causing intoxication. Valley Kush is an excellent choice for medical users who wish to ease pain and stress while remaining clearheaded and functional.
Growing Valley Kush
Valley Kush is a hardy and vigorous strain that almost anyone can grow. Because of its medium height, this variety can be grown both indoors and outdoors. Valley Kush is resilient to most pests and diseases and can thrive in both hot and cool climates. Valley Kush thrives in a temperate climate, with low humidity.
Valley Kush forms giant colas, with large, dense buds. Some phenotypes may need to be staked to prevent the branches from bending under the weight of the colas.
Valley Kush tends to flower rapidly, with most plants reaching maturity in eight weeks. As the plants ripen, THC levels often begin to increase. To comply with the federal THC threshold of 0.3 percent, farmers are advised to test the cannabinoid content of their crops often, and harvest the plants as quickly and efficiently as possible. Farmers should reference applicable state and local legislation regarding proper hemp-testing guidelines.
Some environmental stressors such as heavy rainfall and high winds may cause a spike in THC production. Farmers in harsh environments can limit THC content by growing the plants indoors or in greenhouses.
Indoor Growing
Most phenotypes of Valley Kush are of medium height; however, some plants may stretch significantly during the early flowering period. High-stress and low-stress training methods, including topping, fimming, and super cropping, may help to minimize the stretch and increase the yield of Valley Kush.
Pest and Disease Control
Due to the density and frost of the buds, some phenotypes of Valley Kush may be prone to botrytis, also known as bud rot. Farmers can avoid botrytis infections by planting in direct sunlight, spacing the plants apart (2,500 to 3,500 seeds per acre), and lightly pruning them. Indoor growers can prevent botrytis by providing sufficient lighting and ventilation, keeping the humidity level below 50 percent during the flowering period, and removing excess fan leaves.
Feeding Valley Kush
During the vegetative growth period, Valley Kush requires an ample supply of nitrogen. During the flowering period, Valley Kush requires higher levels of phosphorous and potassium. To prevent nutrient deficiencies, farmers provide the plants with a diet rich in nitrogen, phosphorous, and potassium, as well as modest concentrations of calcium, magnesium, and sulfur, and trace amounts of chlorine, molybdenum, copper, iron, manganese, zinc, and boron.
Some phenotypes of Valley Kush may require more calcium and magnesium than other plants. Farmers can add a cal-mag supplement to their regular nutrient program or amend the soil with Epsom salt and dolomite lime.
Valley Kush thrives in organic soil, with a pH level between six and seven. Providing the proper pH level will allow the plants to absorb a wide spectrum of nutrients. If the pH is too low or too high, Valley Kush may display signs of nutrient deficiencies.
